Iowa

Welcome to my blog and thanks for following! The writings are created by me, Jennifer Alfia DiMarzo and the photographs presented are also taken by me.  (Painting above:  a commission for the Blackhawk Hotel, Cedar Falls, IA, created by my husband, Dean DiMarzo).  I appreciate your time and dedication as I travel into my eleventh month of blog writings.  I hope that you may be able to continue joining me throughout the remaining couple of months of my creative year long journey! Thanks again and enjoy!

Glancing east, Tonance was captured by the endless rows of cornfields.  His eyes wide and lit like a child unwrapping his first bicycle.  The field's breeze felt so serene and inviting as the corn stalks swayed gracefully to a slow beat, all of their own.  Captivated by the stalks and the sunset, Tonance and his horse, Nouze, continued on, galloping freely towards the infinite dirt roads with colorful rusty barns that lay ahead.  One of the first barns he approached, had two arched round doors.  This particular mustard colored barn blended with the environment perfectly, whilst a man sitting on a stool playing banjo appeared beside it, almost like he was planted there.  As the man took the straw out of his mouth and replaced it with a harmonica, Nouze's ears perked up and his large, muscular body halted.  The harmonica hummed just as Tonance's great grandmother's old silver tea kettle whistled.  He immediately roped Nouze to the nearby telephone pole, as he travelled back in time at least thirty years.  Tonance flipped the feathers in his long, black ponytail from his left shoulder to his back, slung on his leather beaded cape and strongly stepped onto the dirt below.  He communicated instantly with all of the townspeople peeking out of the door at him and smiling.  Their sparkly eyes and the kind waves of each of their arms, made it an easy decision for him to embark upon the musical journey inside.  Nouze showed his approval by taking a large drink of water from the wash bin filled with tasty suds.   Tonance grabbed two suds and tapped them gently together as he sat down at the distressed high wooden table with tall bar stool that was meant just for him.  What a wonderful bunch he would be nestling in with for the night.

The Value of Time

Welcome to my blog and thanks for following! The writings are created by me, Jennifer Alfia DiMarzo and the photographs presented are also taken by me. (Although the one above was taken by my mother, D. Brien). I appreciate your time and dedication as I travel into my tenth month of blog writings.  I hope that you may be able to continue joining me once a week, throughout the remaining few months of my creative year long journey! "Always be sure to take the time to stop and smell the roses"...She rehearsed this like a broken record in her head as she slowly picked another Cortland and tossed it carefully into the basket.  It's funny how time goes, she thought to herself.  One minute you're celebrating your fourteenth birthday, the next minute you're cringing because the big 4 - 0 seems right around the corner.  The big oak tree limb finally fell in her backyard the other day.  Some said the tree was dead from the very beginning.  Veronica and her were just glad they weren't walking around the backyard at the time it decided to go.  She thought back to the weekend at the orchard and how it was breathtaking watching Sabrina giggle and happily grunt as she sucked the life out of her Cortland.  They were all pleased to see this happening before their very eyes.  It took only twenty minutes to arrive at the orchard that day.  They enjoyed the pickings and the banjo playing for nearly two hours, but when arriving home, it seemed they never left.  She felt like she had to redo the whole thing again, like it didn't really happen.  But it did.  Sabrina stared back at her wide eyed and full of life.  They all looked forward to the wonderful evening ahead baking pies in the brisk kitchen with Nana.  "Who wants to core the apples?" She thought of how he said he could never bite into a whole piece of fruit and imagined this pie would be the most fasciniating he had ever tasted.  Never ask the time.

He enjoyed viewing the ripples and reflections it had to freely offer. As he took a few gulps from his stainless steel canister, he questioned why he wasn't cupping his hands under the fresh water flowing down stream.  He thought - it's no wonder that as humans we require an essential amount of this beautiful element daily.  The "W" he made with his three fingers while using his basic sign language techniques made it easy for most of his fellow student hikers to follow and mimic.  Although the river that appeared in front of them, may have seemed very basic, boring and dull to many, it was a powerful tool in his daily life.  The students continued to sign just how much of a very important component it was in their lives as well.  By choosing to never overlook the simplest things life has to offer, he appeared to be one of the greatest teachers to those boys that day and every day thereafter.

She couldn't get that spectacular moment of time shared out of her head.  The wisdom and knowledge she received just by briefly communicating with such an intellectually stimulating human being was phenomenal.  She only wished the span of time spent together was greater in length.  Perhaps next time.  Would there be a next time?  Once again she realized that some days were just meant to be more special than others.  This ninth day of May was certainly one of those days.  She continued on, happily skipping down the sparkling silver ramp that lay in front of her.  She exhibited such a free-spirited grace that individuals at the bottom waiting to approach the top, smiled up at her with a curiosity only a certain few would be so privileged to ever find out about.

One Little House

She interpreted it as her life size doll house. Viewing this pale yellow color with stark white trim made her big blue eyes sparkle. She was mesmerized by the charcoal black front door and curiously imagined what was behind it. Traversing slowly up the brick walkway, she couldn't help but notice how well manicured the surrounding shrubbery and plants were. She remembered the days her Mama used to place her snuggly on her hip while watering the plants and vegetables in their garden. The large, red tomatoes and rows of overflowing sugar snap peas they harvested appeared as clear in her mind as this unique structure in front of her this day. Mama and her used to pick the sugar snap peas off the vines, one by one while singing "This Land Is Your Land". Humming the tune softly, as if she had never stopped, Isabella looked up at the pale structure just as she heard the creek from the front door. Someone actually resided there! Excitedly, she hoped to possibly engage in a small conversation about the property, if the person so desired. Eagerly, with her blue eyes at their widest, she sat on pins and needles anticipating the history of her extra special little doll house.

He knew he should take that next step and move forward, which of course she had encouraged him to do for many moons.  As he embarked upon the entrance to this beautiful stone church, his uncertainty seemed to disappear and everything fell directly into place.  As he cherished all of the glorious elements inside this magnificient structure, he was simultaneously pulled in the direction of the wide open wooden door, at the rear of the church, which lead out towards the ocean.  The answer was satisfyingly simple.  When one door closes, another door most certainly opens.

Young Harvest II

Welcome to my blog and thanks for following! The writings are created by me, Jennifer Alfia DiMarzo and the original artwork presented above is created by American artist, Dean DiMarzo.  Thank you for your genuine dedication as I travel into my seventh month of blog writings.  I hope that you may be able to continue joining me once a week, throughout the remaining five months of my creative year long journey...of course until the next trail sparks! Enjoy!

He loved to run.  He was rather crafty and would always successfully outsmart Ethan.  Ethan was ultimately drawn to his prolific texture and wide range of colors.  Out of all of the varieties of these species, "Young Harvest" was most easily recognized by his American flag like pattern, draping over his entire body.  Although Ethan was a long time experienced hunter, he never once thought of capturing this beautiful creature, nor embarking upon the taste in which others spoke so highly about.  He merely enjoyed traversing the fields of South Dakota and discovering all of the good fortune "Young Harvest" had to offer.  Just as Ethan reached for his afternoon taboule sandwich, he joined "Young Harvest", who at that moment was sitting alone eating seeds and leaves off of the nearby trees.  From then on he and Ethan caroused in the undisturbed grass for the remainder of the afternoon, straight through early sunset and into evening's end.

He knew they were best purchased in the summer, especially from their local Farmer's Market.  She was attracted to their beautiful shape and sheen. She envisioned preparing a Rustic Italian dish.  He was mesmorized with how the photographs he took of them were so captivating to his eye, which of course would no doubt transfer onto canvas.  When baked they had such a tender flavor as well as a very sweet taste.  Their thick gorgeous skin reminded her of a ripe portabella and a delicate cut of sirloin.  Not only did they both enjoy knowing that these lovely vegetables are the popular choice in Italy but that they are prevalent at their table any time.  Low in calories, they served as the perfect, healthy main course.  (Of course generously stuffed with risotto, fresh vegetables, ground lamb, cheddar cheese and a touch of pesto, which added that rustic flare she was searching for).  Their day's mission was complete and without surprise, polished off within twenty four hours.  Only scrap cuts of julienned red pepper and ground lamb remained for the pup to enjoy.

Skeeter

His fur was charcoal black, with a mane-like necklace around his neck and shoulders, similar to that of a lion's.   He was referred to as a bunny rabbit but to Charlie he was much more than that.  He named him Skeeter.  It took Skeeter eons to chew and digest the Cheerios Charlie would lay out on the linoleum tile for him, much longer than it would have taken any lion!  Water, Skeeter's beverage of choice, was sipped as slow as a turtle moves.  Charlie was always afraid that he was going to break Skeeter's back whenever he had the guts to hold him.  Skeeter was as delicate as a feather, and of course did not have the hard shell a turtle has on it's back.  (One could surely relate why Charlie was so tentative).  Though the time the two of them spent together was minimal, the meals and quiet times shared were deeply memorable occassions for the both of them.   The departure lasted the greatest length.  The moment the car pulled into the driveway of the farm where the little girl lived, Charlie's eyes filled up with water.  He couldn't hold back the tears when handing over the cage to the new young owner in pig tails, who was busy combing her Barbie's hair.  Charlie immediately thought back to the hours he would spend brushing the rabbit's coat, knowing how much Skeeter enjoyed his caressing movements.  Charlie's eyes met the little girl's eyes just at that very moment and they happily agreed upon weekly visitations.  Skeeter was one lucky bunny and Charlie, knowing this wouldn't be the last time he saw Skeeter, was once again one happy little boy.

Subtle yet sophisticated.  Simple yet defined.  It clearly spoke to them the instant they met.  The private drive bubbled over with history as well as present day stories.  It was the beginning of their engagement then.  Reminiscing, he softly pressed on the brake pad and within seconds was whispering the story of what it was like living up on that hill at age seventeen.  Nineteen years had passed almost as quickly as the nineteen minutes it took for him to tell the story.  She leaned in for the embrace as the wind began to howl through the tightly rolled car windows.  Their future was much closer than they had imagined.  He eagerly accelerated up the hill while she tied the pink ribbon once again around her ponytail.  While peeking back at the kids, she became extremely anxious to get inside, open the windows and let the years of tales begin to unfold.

She hadn't even heard of the spot and Suzie had never even been.  It was a win-win for the two of them.  The full sun joined them as the rushing sound of the ocean's waves tiptoed along the tiny pebbles.  The privacy of the beach was perfect.  Conversation clicked just as the captain's "All Aboard!" call was heard over the yacht's speaker.  The breeze carefully lifted her hair off of her sweaty neck.  Suzie's words of "dwellers" and "embracers" couldn't have come at a better time, as she began unlacing her strappy sandles, motioning towards the water.  The sand was warm and the water was tantalizing.  The beach that day began an ever-evolving friendship.

Red, yellow, maybe no blue, though shades of orange, hues of violet and definitely some green could be found in between.  The professor reviewed the primary and secondary colors through this dramatic dish with such vibrancy.  He examplified and reiterated upon the impact colors have not only on one's visual senses but also on their taste buds.   He hoped this information would be retained in the student's heads throughout the semester.  With each bite they sampled, they produced the same colors with their acrylics on their individual silver palettes.  Although elementary in style, the students were engrossed.  The only peep heard was Destiny volunteering to bring in the next eclectic homemade creation.  The professor was thrilled.  Xavier held up his finished color wheel while simultaneously savoring his final mouthful.  He wished for more of this dish, but remained internally inspired.  He leaped on to begin the initial phase of a plein air landscape.  What a colorful week ahead it was going to be, not only for Xavier, but for the entire class!

She prayed she wouldn't have to use it.  It appeared cute but the compliments ended there.  She imagined what it must have been like long ago without the integration of modern amenities.  She was thankful she was born during the eighties when toilets had already existed for years.  She never took for granted "taking care of her business" indoors, within the parameteres of four walls, in a designated bathroom, in a human's home.  She was not fond of "going" anywhere near the outdoors with the scent of animals and contagious plants nearby.  If this little shed was all there was, would she be forced to "go" in the bucket?  She decided to leave the picture on her camera disc and frantically ran the seven and half miles home for some needed relief.

The hazelnut fig spread buttered ever so smoothly onto the rich cranberry walnut loaf.  The hard, thin Italian salami longed to be paired with the strong, white cheddar slices.  The whipped cream cheese whispered softly to him.  He listened and applied an even angelic square chunk on top of each creation.  His taste buds curtseyed, as the sounds of Coltrane's saxophone sunk deeper into his bones.  The dining room was revived that afternoon.

Each one served a purpose.  They had been pre-arranged in that order for multiple reasons.  The perfect amount of space was left between each one.  The color and shape of each was critically chosen.  The distant sound of the crashing waves competed with the peaceful pattern.  The nearby stranger started his engine and disrupted the entire moment.

It sat at the head of the street, with it's touch of red, attractive for all to see.  Created brick by brick, it stood solid.  Whether delivered by waiter, waitress, hostess or bartender, the food was to salivate over.  The first crayon line drawn on the brown craft paper, still clearly etched in his head as if it were yesterday.  Today, the heart is larger and the new addition is realistically celebrated.  Just as his mother was so well behaved and quite shy then, he exampled the same.  The hostess winked and handed them the brown paper rolled up tight on their way out.  Couples nearby stared as their sandwiches sizzled.  They would always retrieve back there.  Next time as a trio.

Two chairs joined one another upon the porch, both speaking in a language only they knew.  They concluded that since they were constructed of the same material and resembled one another, they must be related.  Excitedly they felt an instant desire to expand their family and utilized their four legs to gather another member to compliment them.  Of course they were aware that this new sibling was not made of the same material and did not look anything like either of them.  Nonetheless, the three united peacefully.  The trio sat patiently, eager to provide kind, hungry souls with an intimate place to share their next meal.

It was her turn.  She always dreamt of running up and down the lanes, dodging the heavy balls as they protruded down the lane.  Her score card was empty but her mind and body were full of never-ending energy.  She completed thirty laps in a matter of minutes.  Her tongue lay low, dripping soft saliva.  Her tail curled back, as she watched the man in stripes in the nearby lane, stretching for his next ball.  She anxiously awaited for her owner to release one of his balls.  As he did, she sped off with such a large, tremendous jump, managing to capture a nearby chipmunk.  She wasn't made for bowling.  Maybe next time.

The architecture was tremendous.  Thank God for the window at the top.  They would have felt claustrophobic without it.  They admired the view each and every time they pushed through the heavy glass doors.  All would look up and hush.  Backpacks full of books on broad shoulders piled in and out, day and night.  Pins and needles dropped for all to hear.  Would they spend another year here?

The view was impeccable.  The landscape remarkable.  The chatter minimal.  The barking low.  The chirping soft.  The wind subtle.  The sun bearable.  The rocks flat.  The cloth spread.  The sol peaked.  The pair of peaches crisp.  Acorns hit the dirt.  Thunder roared.  The two spirits combined.  The owl had spoken.

Rolling over laps, bellies and bodies, his mouth smiled most fluently.  He felt his best climbing stairs and rolling around wagon wheels.  Perching himself at the highest point in a room and looking out over parlors and family rooms was part of his daily routine.  Calling him "Little King" was fitting, yet funny.  He loved showing off to little ones running around below.  The children found him utterly amusing and wished for him to constantly display his tricks.  They truly enjoyed watching him "play dead".  The parents were always so heavily involved in their academic conversation that they missed out on all the fun.  Mr. Hathaway would end by jumping high up several times in a row.  He then would choose a book from the various owner's shelves, pretend to read it briefly, while turning the pages with his small paws and then place the book neatly back on the shelf, just as he found it.  The giggles rose as well as the sound level of the adult conversation.  The children and Mr. Hathway would always treasure this special bond.  You are in disbelief?  See for yourself!

Their bright green tops were cut off with the sharpest kitchen knife in the toolbox.  Their interiors were scooped out like hollow wooden dowels.  Their skin ever-so-soft, caressed in olive oil and neatly placed into three hundred and fifty degrees before filling with their interior belongings.  Tasty parmesan risotto, resembling beach sand, was cooked to perfection and neatly set aside.  The Italian mixture of veggies, finely chopped and carmelized to preciseness, was patiently awaiting where it would reside.  Juicy, ground sausage sizzled with seasoning.  Each green delicasy was fork lifted ever so lightly from the hot temperature, then tipped carefully to empty any excess water into the drain hole.  It was now time to build the first floors of these homes.  The sausage, veggies and risotto got along so well along the lower level.  A medium sized handful of mozzarella sprinkled over the colorful first floors added the needed texture.  A heaping scoop of homemade chunky tomato sauce spread evenly onto each of their roof tops like new tar on pavement.  The next layer of interior filling was added onto the second floors with the addition of more mozzarella and sauce over the roofs, flowing onto all four sides.  These finished model homes would now bake fully in the hot structure made just for them.  After thirty minutes, their appearance was even more pleasing than their unfinished look.  The lunch horn rang and the five construction workers took their seats.  One forkful proved the building process a success.

It was the ideal environment to create in.  Often times music could be heard playing, other times complete silence.  Technological items were necessities for keeping sane. There was a subtle sense of isolation, yet they did not desire it any other way.  The kitchen was their constant gathering place.  It was saturated with a warm, comforting serenity, exploding daily with new flavors.  Candles glimmered regularly, providing thought for refreshing, out-of-the-ordinary ideas.  Colors found in the abode were sophisticated and classy, never fluorescents or brights.  The beard the owner displayed was neat and trim, yet his glasses opposite - foggy and extremely thick.  The concoctions his mistress created were envisioned from the never-ending files in her head.  That evening the full moon assisted the lighting in their home, which accompanied the tone of the eclectic stuffed sweet potato dish perfectly.  The full moon joined in, rising to the occasion through the large glass backyard door.  They sat anticipating the taste, as the music grew louder.  Their body temperatures pivoted.  Already longing for more, they had just reached their peak of complete and utter liberation.

She couldn't decide which was better - the conversation or the food.  The art of the conversation was extremely interesting and intriguing, as the food was entirely delicious and stimulating to the tongue, thus making it difficult to get up and walk away from either of the two.  If she was not participating in the current topic, she was busy taking a bite or two of the heavenly bliss.  The cherry red baked tomatoes along the top of the eclectic Italian dish, reminded her of her family history.  Her Nana-Nana came over on the boat from Italy, barely speaking any English.  She was completely dedicated to the Catholic church as well as to cooking loads of tasty homemade meals in her kitchen.  The fresh julienned vegetables stuffed inside the solid pie, refreshed her memory of the prolific times when she would assist her Nano with the ripe pickings from his glorious vegetable gardens.  It seemed everyone whom surrounded the dining table on this extra special day threw a kiss, a squeeze of the arm or a strong pinch of the cheek her way at that very moment.  The connection they all felt towards each other was deep, unlike any other.  The hot, moist carmelized onions and peppers slid down each of their throats with such grace, just as another family story was beginning to unfold.  Her mind was definitely made up - the power of the strong conversation and wonderful memories, needed the balance of the integration of the fine home baked food to go with it.  She then savored another bite of her frittata while one of her uncle's shared a story about the family catering business.

He hollowed them out as if they were monumental sculptures to be exhibited at The Louvre.  Cooking the filling over high heat, with such a sophistication.  The tune he hummed was ever so serene and peaceful, easily attracting others his way.  The way he organized his ingredients in such a quick, perfect pattern was mesmorizing.  Timing and routine was everything with him, one would not want to disrupt this by getting too close.  When he was ready, he asked the youngest boy in the audience to assist him.  The boy lit up like a lightbulb.  The boy was slowly handed the most delicate silver spoon and was ordered to fill the scooped out vegetable shells or "boats" with the magical filling.  After doing so, he noticed a gigantic chunk of mozzerella off to his right side.  It  was wrapped in a thick white terrycloth towel.  This was so he could hold it properly as he was shown how to carefully shred and layer the cheese onto the tops of the boats.  These sculptural items appeared even more gorgeous and full of character with the added texture on top.  The young boy thought to himself that the shape and colors reminded him of picturesque fish he had once encountered.  He was then told to gently place these forms of beauty in the oven, while keeping both eyes on them as they baked.  Before he knew it, the timer buzzed and the creations were complete.  Would they choose to view them simply as unique art forms or choose to indulge in their original works of art?

Eggplant Pie

Welcome to my blog and thanks for following during "Food Week". The writings are created by me, Jennifer Alfia DiMarzo and the material presented this week are photographs also taken by me, based on the subject matter of homemade recipes. We hope that you may be able to join us Monday through Friday, throughout the next year on our creative journey! Enjoy!

It was more than just a dish.  It was a dish filled with the most delicious items one could imagine.  To carry on such an Italian tradition was empowering.  It felt so fulfilling recreating what your extended family and ancestors created over and over.  I was told you always needed your fair share of olive oil in your cabinets for you never knew when such a dish would need to be created.  Ripe eggplants were also a must.  Italian sausage, onions and peppers as well.  Auntie's cabinets were always full.  Her pantry bustling over.  The smells of Italian soups, pastas and fresh fruit and vegetables protruding from the ceramic bowl in the center of her table.  Her home was always so welcoming, so inviting and so full of laughter.  Her table set for at least six or eight at all times.  The doily cloths that were draped over the glass were made by her mother, my great grandmother.  Coasters were the base for the crystal wine glasses and the best silver was always presented.  I loved how my husband laid out the brown parchment along the counter to soak up the remaining oils of the eggplant.  Layering the pie and preparing it for the oven were very important steps in this recipe.  Through my husband I found out how our family's were somehow connected - through a land mass resembling a boot.

Charlie transported the summer wood out to the small fire.  Judy was indoors preparing her famous batch of pie filling and forming her decorative pie crusts.  Charlie added more wood to the fire, as Judy placed the her pies upon a large silver baking tray.  Steadily handling the heavy tray, Charlie strategically placed it across the top of the fire, allowing the pies to bake comfortably.  Judy joined him outdoors.  The aromas that poured into the crisp mountain air were refreshing.  The smells spread throughout their acreage, into the neighbor's yards.  An hour went by before she knifed the first pie to see how it was progressing.  The steam poured out of the slit wonderfully and the knife pulled out clean.  Charlie broke off a small piece of the warm crust to taste.  He nodded, showing complete satisfaction with their successful winter ritual.  They both grabbed a mitt and proceeded in walking the tray back indoors.  The strong apple scent lingered throughout the kitchen and upstairs into the bedrooms.  Judy eagerly grabbed a fork to sample her first bite.  She smiled from ear to ear, showing she was pleased with the achievement of their annual ritual.  Two plates of warm pie awaited with a scoop of rum raisin.  They sat peacefully looking into the fire, enjoying every bite of their seasonal reward.

Pierre Der Dumont Orchards

We carefully observed as they morphed from early shades of yellows and greens to bright stark reds.  It was similiar to watching the autumn season arrive.  As each leaf turned color, it seemed no time before each was falling to the ground.  Grandfather said that if the apple twisted off of it's vine with ease, it meant it was ready to be picked.  We did a trial run down by the river and sure enough, he was correct.  It was then he grabbed the handles to the dusty old stack of apple pails and off we all went skipping down to the orchard along it's path full of hay.  When we arrived, it seemed the sun became alive because it snuck out from behind the clouds almost instanteneously.  Leaning against one gigantic tree trunk was a tall wooden tool with three wooden prongs.  It looked like some kind of device one would use to capture the apples.  Louisa was overly curious and carefully jumped up to sit upon my shoulders.  As I handed her the nifty item, we noticed she had some practice with this object, for as she was twisting those ruby red apples with such ease, they were blissfully dropping onto the canvas below that Tommy and Angela were stretching ever so tightly.  Again, just as grandfather assured us, apples fall from the sky when they are ready.  Years later I would unearth this precious picking staff from the grounds of an old New England Home.

She was defined as the infamous voluptuous object of the Golden Age of Tango.  Adorned in her ruffled five-layered flamingo dress, she captivated the townspeople along it's square.  Her well known Spanish tango dance was not only flowing with bountiful, graceful moves but with beautiful poetic lyrics to be heard from any distance.  As she sang in her romantic tone on the gazebo, her voice seemed to attract the beauty of doves.  One particular white dove landed upon her bare shoulder, while the others took a seat on the railing surrounding her.  Their webbed feet tapping to the beat in combination with the clapping pattern heard from the crowd.  The townspeople cheerfully chanted her name, "Mejores Peras, Mejores Peras"!  Her mandarin colored dress swung up and down with each kick of her long legs.  She energetically pulled willing children onto the platform with her.  It was then, the remaining white doves from the railing began landing on the shoulders of each little boy and girl in the audience.  The doves sprinkled them with a subtle tango magic.  The children began dancing around in circles until they became entirely dizzy and fell giggling to the floor.  Various townsmen and women caught onto this glorious vibe.  The doves stimulated them also.   Mejores Peras' golden voice rose.  This enchanting day had only just begun to unravel.

My mother's tightly covered Tiffany bowl was always adequately stocked.  The royalty they portrayed was enduring.  The timeless pride they emitted was captivating, as well as their distinctive, unparalleled flavor.  I had aspired to visit where they were first cultivated, even planning a future itinerary for Western Asia.  Whenever the bowl in the parlor was low, the next minute I blinked and could hear their hard, whitish exterior shells battering against the sides.  I would scoop a few off of the top of the overflowing bowl.  Snapping their shells with great anticipation, I was fascinated by their mauvish skin and light green flesh.  Each one had distinctive qualities all of their own.  Often times I would line them up by size upon our glass table top, examining them intensely, then relishing them at an intimate pace.  Hours would go by and my mother would inquire if I was going out to play with the other children.  Instead, I chose to continue writing notes about my obession in my scratch pad.  I knew I needed all the time I could get especially knowing that these fine bites had a twenty year peak date.  Hence, the answer to my mother took her by surprise.  I was off to locate the seed of my virgin delicacy.

His studio was far from tidy.  Several of his paints and brushes could be found along the dusty window sills and crusty table tops, uncovered and stale, while others were wet and appeared more current.  Blank canvases lay stretched and unstretched along the marble floors.  Several were heaved upon empty desks and backs of chairs.  They say his studio in Paris was a gathering place for the city's most modern artesians.  Standing behind the screen walls made that very apparent.  It became clear why he was able to draw before he was able to speak.  His priorities and artistic nature, made him a genius then and now.  Cigarettes and ash trays lay everywhere, emitting a strong but pleasant stench.  She imagined it was similar in all of his homes.  The light through the long, vertical windows poured in like a river flowing into it's sanctuary.  The elegant golden clips supported the deep maroon drapes while creating an intimate backdrop.  He inhaled his long smoke with palette in opposite hand, as he proceeded in scooping a large palette knife full of burnt sienna onto his canvas.  The outline he composed was childlike with a subtle sophistication.  He glanced over at his still life,  integrating the deep reds and canary yellow tones from the roses ahead of him.  The Catalan music playing in the background of this wondrous scene rose to its climax.  Sitting back in the velvet upholstered chair, she hungered for the day she too reached ninety two.

Who says you never see the light at the end of the tunnel?  Have you ever physically climbed into a tunnel, struggled all the way through it, squirming your body to the finale while the light at the light at the other end, quite a distance away serves as a beacon of hope for you?  They see the light every day.  Sometimes without even going to such extremes.  They already know what will be next.  They both reach for the correct switch to flip.

Travelling down the road, passing several station wagons full of trash confirmed that some held a genuine kindness for humanity and community.  Others with their piles thrown off to the side, just sitting, accumulating and stenching more every day, weren't examplifying much.  She tried to hand out flyers for any that would accept.  She got rid of what she needed to, her puppy watching her intensely.  He threw the dog another bone as she jumped back over to her seat.  His blue eyes were so young and honest.  She thought aloud why her pup never stayed put for the man whom she knew she was getting a treat from.  "They'll be plenty of time for that", he assured her.  Her car started with a roar.

They thought they looked invincible wearing their seven inch heels.  They didn't realize the heels only measured an honest four.  Their weight contradicted their fashionable character.  It took every bone in his body not to mention a lick about nutrition or exercise to them.  He already knew those words did not exist in their vocabulary.  The pink lettering imprinted on the box of donuts was their saving grace.  This strong illumination of color shined through their bodies, crossed their driveway, into his yard and managed to spread the entire length of the street.  Eight AM couldn't come quick enough for their next fix.

There were parts to her that you just couldn't possibly understand.  The more you tried, the less you wanted to.  The Benjamin Moore color charts did not have just one color that defined her, but many.  One day she could be referred to as, "The Grey Lady", the next week she seemed to be "The Queen of Sheba".  Why couldn't she just stay predictable and steady?  Knowing you never knew what you were going to get from her, you had to be on your toes at all times.  All ten of mine were always curled tight.

It came to me one night while lying in bed.  I thought everyone must think this, right?  My thoughts got carried away with my imagination and before you knew it I was in the middle of a cold sweat nightmare.  He wouldn't stop chasing me and circling all around me.  His black cape swooping over me as the background colors of my dream kept switching from shades of blues to pinks to light greens.  What was he trying to portray to me?  Should I be nervous?  Should I research my thoughts further?  I frantically sat up, exhaling slowly.  I made my way downstairs for a tall glass of water.  Tucking myself back under my covers,  I was assured she would be here soon.

"You may only go out to play when all of the frost and ice from the big pine in the front has disappeared", she shouted.  What good was that he thought?  That meant as all of his friends were out sledding, his strict nanny would not let him outdoors until it reached at least thirty six degrees.  What kind of rule was that?  Ted's eyes filled with tears as he stared at the few icy branches left.  The sun was beginning to set.  He wondered how many years this ridiculous nanny would be residing in their home.  At that moment, he received a phone call from a friend who inquired why he wasn't out having fun with the rest of their crew.  Determined, Ted grabbed his hat and mittens and expeditiously zipped his snow suit up.  Maria's head was in the oven, preparing the evening's dinner, so it seemed the perfect time to escape.  Ted snuck out the back door without a peep.  When he arrived at the school's sledding hill, everyone cheered him on, yelling:  "Hey Frosty, you made it"!  He gladly accepted his silly nickname that evening, for he was feeling such an uncontrollable sense of freedom from the mountain air.  His sled hit the hill with amazing power, while the smile on his face appeared as large as a full upside down rainbow.  Ted was exactly where he belonged.  The temperature had just reached thirty-six degrees.

The whiteness, the purity.  The coldness, the bitterness.  The beauty, the elegance.  The frost, the quiver.  Winter comes again.  She felt awful for the other three seasons that didn't seem to get their fair share of time in the sun or even their "fifteen minutes of fame".  The roads, the plows.  The quietness, the calmness.  The tardiness, the accidents.  The joyfulness, the freedom.  Did winter deserve such recognition?  "The Weighted Tree" continued to prosper and grow within the white field with such class.

The tree resembled the largest Christmas tree he had ever laid his eyes upon.  He retrieved his father's fourty foot ladder in conjunction with a box of Christmas ornaments from his mother's loft.  He aspired to start stringing away, as a large clump of heavy snow fell onto his hat at that very moment, as if to say, "Leave me alone,  I do not want to be decorated"!  The boy spoke back to the tree expressing that he believed she was the most dazzling thing, with or without decor.  He portrayed to her how much he admired her trunk, her free-flowing branches and how impressed he was with the way she displayed herself through every season.  He cherished collecting the mini pine cones she shed during the autumn months, as well as enjoying viewing the numerous birds that conjugated upon her daily.  He imagined attaching some rope to her so that his little boy could swing in the shade under her large canopy.  All of a sudden he noticed she elongated her entire tree trunk and spine, as if she could read his very thought.  She swung her branches aggressively from left to right repeatedly.  The snow quickly landed upon him rather abruptly, even burying his little puppy, Samuel for a few seconds.  This was a sure sign that she just wanted to be left exactly the way she was.  He slowly sank down in the snow and sighed.   He would now just have to settle with welcoming this second coming of winter.

Spider Web

Welcome to my blog and thanks for following us during my week long series titled, "Winter Comes Again".  The writings are created by me, Jennifer Alfia DiMarzo and the photographs presented this week are taken by me, due to my husband's show and commission schedule.  Thanks for understanding and keep on reading!  We hope that you continue to join us Monday through Friday, throughout the next year on our creative journey! Enjoy!

They wondered how high he would reach?  Was he cold?  Did he enjoy his bare arms and branches?  Or did he miss his bountiful leaves?  While munching on the nuts in their chubby mouths, they looked up to the sky.  They fantasized that the tree was the world's largest spider web and it was being weaved directly in their front yard!  How could it be?  The more they viewed, the more a branch seemed to grow off to the right and then one to the left.  Some were bent, some were erect and some created a special segment through another branch.  Their bushy tails swung on every branch all the way up to the tippity-top.  The weight of their full bellies, bellowed out many of the branches, but then snapped them back into place once they jumped to the next section of the "web".  They all arrived back at the notch with their cheeks bursting with nuts.  They planned to store them on the largest base, closest to the top.  They felt safe on this veiny web.  It was their home.  Did he enjoy them climbing up him?  Was he comfortable?  Did he miss them when they weren't around?  As they continuously thought about his feelings, it seemed countless branches sprouted, creating more of a mysterious weave for them to frollick upon.  They were thrilled.  They scurried down to the bottom and spread the news to the others.  There was no limit to their boundaries and they treasured knowing this.  The six of them sat very still, with their tails swinging and paws to their mouths.  As they chewed steadily away at their blessed nuts, another branch had just given birth.
